Reminder - Thursday, April 28 Meeting

Reminder that this Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. is a meeting of the minds known as the Fairfax City Democratic Committee. Third Floor. Fairfax City Hall. Fairfax, VA.

All are invited.

The Values of the Fairfax City Democratic Committee

Earlier, I had asked people to send me or post their thoughts on what they felt were the values of our party and our committee.

Here is a culmination of what everyone said. Please feel free to comment.

The Values of the Fairfax City Democratic Committee

The Fairfax City Democratic Committee believes in the core Democratic principles and Virginia values that have made this community, Commonwealth, and country great.

We believe in:

• Opportunity – This is the umbrella of our values. Everything we do should open doors for our fellow Americans and provides chances to succeed.

• Responsibility – With our own lives as well as those of others. This means spending taxpayer dollars wisely and in a way that benefits everyone.

• Honesty – We must trust each other and have others trust us. This can only happen if we are honest about ourselves and our values.

• Equality – By offering a level playing field we ensure everyone has a shot at their American dream, whatever that may be.

• Caring – Our society is based on community, not individualism. We believe in looking after each other and being compassionate.

• Security – Communities cannot prosper without a secure country and a secure economy. We believe in strengthening our national defense while building an economy that secures our future.

• Freedom – Government should be involved in the lives of its citizens as little as possible. It is there to be a help, not a hindrance.

• Fairness and Justice – These are two pillars our society and our legal system are built upon. Only with fairness can justice be served.

• Duty – Democrats are patriots. We believe in our country as we believe in ourselves and our fellow Americans to do the right thing.

Our Committee and our Party are not built around supporting programs or issues. Instead, the issues like providing quality education, an opportunistic economy, and healthcare for all stem from the values we hold dear - values that are not just those of this Party and Committee, but of Virginia and America.

Kilgore's property tax scheme - Caps investment, hurts our kids

Ok folks. We had a discussion of property taxes last night. And this press release from the Kaine campaign says it all...Kilgore's plan is a risky scheme that devalues homes' values and would take away power from local governments to invest in our schools.

Take a look at this link when you get a chance. They are some great points to make with our Republican friends. I don't think even they will be able to agree with Kilgore.

What I take away from this, too, is that any sort of assesment cap is like capping our investments. And for most of us, our home is our largest investment. Kilgore's plan would effectively cap the growth of our investments.

Can you believe a Republican would even support such a plan? Seems to smack in the face of free market enterprise and a capitalistic society. Spread the word about Kilgore's plan and watch Republicans stay home on election day, or hopefully vote for Tim Kaine, who has a common sense plan to lower property tax bills without risking our investments.

Suggest some links

Forgot to mention ... Please suggest what links you would like to see to the right of the page. I am thinking it would be good to have some other Blogs, campaigns, progressive groups, news outlets.

Feel free to suggest what you would think it interesting.

Welcome - Our Values

At our Thursday night meeting we watched the George Lakoff video, talked a lot about values, and how we reach out to like-minded people who haven't yet been involved with our Committee.

It was a great discussion that should continue. I hope that we can use this blog to engage each other in coming up with ideas on just what are our values as a Committee and a party.

The only guiding principle I have with this blog is that we remember we are all friends. We may disagree from time to time, but let's keep focused on the common purposes we as Democrats have.

We believe in justice, fairness, compassion, security, respect ... the list goes on and on.

To kick things off, let me ask you this: What do you think should be the top three values Virginia Democrats should have?
